When people tell someone with disabilities to “just try harder”, they’re showcasing their own fear. They can’t accept that there’s illnesses from which you never recover. They can’t cope with the frailty of the human body. They need to make it a personal failing so THEY can remain in denial.
Living with chronic illness is an exercise in patience. You must learn to be patient with your body. You must learn to rest when you don’t want to. You must learn to accept a loss of control. You must learn to deal with the unrelenting pain of being abandoned by those who should care for you.
