Many media types and Dems continue to operate as if Trump is a politically invincible figure, a "Teflon Don." But in truth he's becoming an increasingly weak, failing, diminished, unpopular, naked-emperor figure, and it's time to treat him as such. 1/ (new piece) newrepublic.com/article/2000...

Wow. New NBC poll finds 78% support vaccines, including 72% of independents and 67% of Republicans. As I keep trying to argue, Democrats should polarize the shit out of the vaccine/public health debate. Make people take sides. It will split Republicans and MAGA. See this:

This is a damning anecdote from Rep Jim McGovern. He tells me that during debate over Trump's big budget bill, House Rs privately admitted to him that it would screw over their own constituents, yet they had to vote for it anyway. Read all of it. He wrecks them: newrepublic.com/article/1999...

"Negativity is a trap we can fall into during times like these. But we need to stay optimistic/motivated if we’re going to defeat the criminals who are trying to steal our country." Donald Trump is doing a great job building up David Hearn's civil case against the government, which could give him and his lawyers another lever to crowbar loose more communications between DOJ and other agencies leading to his indictment. (cc @davidrlurie.com)

Good get from @davidkurtz.bsky.social: Another migrant who was wrongfully deported just got a judge to order him released from detention. He faced a lot of the horrors that Kilmar Abrego Garcia did. Quite a case: morningmemo.talkingpointsmemo.com/p/first-at-t...

Key point from @davidrlurie.com here. Note that Raskin is seeking interagency communications about Pirro's decision to prosecute David Hearn, e.g., comms between Interior Department and DOJ, as I report here:

Relatedly, this useful @emptywheel.bsky.social timeline shows that Pirro moved to drop the case right after David Hearn made request for grand jury testimony. It sure looks like Pirro's office doesn't want more scrutiny of how they got grand jury to indict. emptywheel.net/2026/08/05/w...

I agree, @whstancil.bsky.social. There is a section of the piece devoted to exactly that idea:

one can hope! I argue in this piece that this has to be a key focus

The critical point here is that this is the blueprint for what a Dem House majority can do with subpoena power:

I've been thinking about this. The crush of necessary investigations is going to be absolutely overwhelming for a Dem House.
