I'd like to talk about the Government Accountability Office, a little known but important federal government agency. Headed by the US Comptroller General, it was established in the Budget and Accounting Act of 1921 as a congressional watchdog to investigate public spending.

Funny how reverence for the Founding stops as soon as it becomes inconvenient. And again, I would like to speak to the managers who told me that posse comitatus was never going to be in play.

This was one of those quiet policy changes that made a huge difference on a basic humanitarian level. I am devastated by this reversal of course.

Those Ohio #s are hard to see as a former Ohioan. Being of an age where I am getting a lot more recommended screenings, I think about insurance every time the person at the desk tells me, "oh, that will just be your $25 copay today." It will take a while for the effects to be fully visible here.

A radical proposition, I know, but "I was scared" and "it's an emergency" are not magic words that allow government institutions and state actors to do anything they want in defiance of existing laws and regulations.

I really don't like coming in as a new reviewer on a MS that's in its second revision. I know, I know, sometimes editors lose reviewers and you have no choice but to bring in someone new, but I feel really bad about recommending a long list of significant changes.

I know it's yesterday's news, but just shaking my head at Thomas's analysis, which seems to make Elk v. Wilkins the general principle and Wong Kim Ark the case that deals with a special population dealing with unique circumstances.

Interesting that Kav reports that changing the plain meaning of the 14th is OK because Things Are Different Now, citing "significant illegal immigration" without noticing that 1) everyone understood there was illegal immigration by the time of WKA and 2) there was a whole world war
