It’s been a long time coming… so thrilled to share the cover (and Oxford UP website last in 🧵) for my book, _Lineage: Genealogy and the Power of Connection in Early America_, pub date 7.2.25 (but will ship, so they say very enticingly, mid-June. 1/ #VastEarlyAmerica 🗃️

Book cover with various kinds of evidence of family history arrayed around the author and title, the latter is _Lineage: Genealogy and the Power of Connection in Early America_. The kinds of materials include printed texts, manuscripts, a red book (shhhhh that figures largely in the Introduction!), a watercolor family record, Fraktur, gravestone, and a sampler. One repeated text says "born free, born free (etc)"

There is so much that is terrible in what has been reported. But among them is the student’s reference to “our president’s laws.”

Thank you so, SO much to everyone who has recommended, read, and posted reviews of my book! And folks who have come to events! Sold out of 1st printing which is amazing (tho let's not get too excited this is an academic print run 😁), has now been reprinted and in process of restocking. Phew. 📚

Every time I talk about my book —nope the history of genealogy in early America is not a cozy story! — I have such great conversations with folks after. Tonight at marvelous Providence Athenaeum a great story about a fierce Loyalist whose grandson to his great chagrin was born on the 4th of July. 🎶

Sorry to use this site for basic research but am looking for longitudinal info on Americans' knowledge of basic civics. Have looked at Annenberg, Hoover, and Dept of Ed. surveys (all have challenging/ wonky ways to access data over time). Also hoping to get further back than the 1990s?

Working my way through weeks of email backlog and having the satisfaction of replying to ones coming in almost instantly! So rare. Once started to calculate how many extra hours I'd have to work to answer all the incoming email any single day and had to stop that for sanity's sake.

So important that the AHA @historians.org is stepping in and stepping up where the association has such an obvious interest and role. The Presidential Records Act is a specific piece of legislation but stands in for a host of related issues.

All I can say is that this was great. Why study war? How do we think about the process and impact? How are we covering it now and what can we learn from earlier esp the American Revolution? Rick Atkinson — will be posted on the JCB’s website soon.

Excellent first episode w Doug Bradburn on Washington's leadership. Failures military and moral, humility, and critical leadership examples. Highly recommend. www.youtube.com/watch?v=Or4H...

Reading is brain work and brain joy. It is its own kind of dopamine to read through something and come out feeling and knowing differently. A summary is like a widget, you can do things with it but it's wholly different. Which is why I saw the post / summary & now going to read the actual piece!
