#SCIMaP estimates current & future economic losses in local communities across the US (counties & Congressional Districts). We explain our approach in a new preprint: www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1... (w @joshuasweitz.bsky.social @asinclair.bsky.social @cl10.bsky.social)

Faceted plot with panels for Atlanta, Pittsbrugh, and Houston. Focal counties (Dekalb, Alleghany, and Houston) are outlined. Surrounding counties are shaded by future estimated annual economic loss due to the proposed cap on indirect costs based on commuter flows that connect to a focal county (indicated by light pink outline).

The NIH Director continues to misunderstand (or mischaracterize) the extent to which research is being gutted. I appreciate this program officer for speaking up.

NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya used sickle cell disease research as an example of something he would not call DEI and cut. It's being cut. www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/n...

After voting to recommend RFK Jr for confirmation, Sen. Tom Tillis clarified that he will be very sad if it turns out that RFK Jr is, in fact, anti-vaccine.

There's something that could be written about how the NIH Director's disdain for the collaborative models of editing on Wikipedia and content moderation on Reddit fit with his approach to grant review

Tweet by Jay Bhattacharya from October 28th: I just read the current grokopedia article on the Great Barrington Declaration. It's balanced & almost entirely factually accurated (though it still has me as Stanford prof). Wikipedia, by contrast, is baised, bordering on libelous. Thank you @elonmusk.

Very cool/unexpected coverage of our work...article in the National Catholic Reporter about Pope Leo's contribution to relief efforts after Cyclone Yaku cites our pre-print, mentions extreme March precipitation in NW Peru has become more likely with climate change www.ncronline.org/news/pope-mu...

NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya is slated to attend the annual conference of Tucker's Brownstone at the end of the month, where he is being honored. They are also currently fundraising for a movie about him, produced by RFK Jr's running mate substack.brownstone.org/p/the-story-...

"The administration may claim that some of these RIFs were ‘errors’. By extension, they may try and argue that many RIFs were ‘correct’. We should assume otherwise: the wholesale use of RIFs is a form of political retribution that does not serve federal agency missions. This is a failure by design."

I went to a talk by NIH Director Bhattacharya last month where he detailed evidence that opportunities for ECRs have declined over the past few decades. Then he moved on to the next slide without offering any solutions (or explaining the actions he's taken so far). Here's a good place to start 👇
