9/11 was traumatic for all Americans. But the U.S. and other governments panicked, and took their eyes off a lot of other threats for a while. We’re still living with the consequences of that panic. My look back at that day and what it brought: www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

This is extrajudicial execution, without any clear threat to the US, no authorization from Congress, and far beyond even Article II. The military is not the president's personal hit squad. Or wasn't, until now.

Like many Never Trumpers and other people with a public profile, I have been on the receiving end of death threats for years just for speaking my mind. No one in America should risk being killed for exercising their right to speak, no matter how despicable you think their views might be.

Here's what I think is happening in Poland. Thank you all for being patient. Gifted. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archiv...

I am 65. I know who Chris Brown is. His first album was over 20 years ago. So there.

I *loved* being an adjunct because it meant I got to teach without going to department meetings, but I, too, had full-time jobs, so adjuncting was a side hustle.

This is exactly right. And I can tell you that when I was interviewed for my first job at Dartmouth in late 1988, some members of the faculty argued that my Georgetown degree was too flimsy to justify hiring me. (Some of them never changed their minds!)

When we opened a job for a political theorist at Dartmouth back in the 90s, one of my colleagues said: "Here come CVs from every cab driver in Berkeley." As I recall we had well over 200 applications for one job. Half of them were no-hopers, but half...weren't. That's just sad and cruel.

I am going through things my parents had and I've found stuff like War Ration coupons. I do have a Boston newspaper (full supplement to the Boston...Something Something) about FDR's death. I assume that's worth something online to collectors. Also, I have my Fallout 4 collector's pins.

"Because so many adjuncts are women, this is a gender issue, so when Tom opines on it - after almost four decades in higher education, he's just mansplaining."
