I believe that it is important for people that struggle with mental health and illness to know that they are not alone — especially when we feel like we are alone. But, for now, know that I am getting help, and that I do want to get better.

Dear Followers,

As you may have noticed, I have not published any recent newsletter updates, and I have not been particularly active on social media. During the past few weeks, I have been experiencing a serious mental health crisis, and it has been an extremely difficult experience — mentally, physically, and emotionally.

For my entire life, I have struggled with mental health and illness. For the past three years, I have not been regularly taking prescribed psychiatric medication or receiving psychological therapy. For the past year, I have experienced severe depression and suicidal ideation, and effects from other untreated mental health issues. I have concealed this from my family and others who care about my life, and allowed my mental health to deteriorate to a near breaking point.

Today, I began the process of receiving the professional medical care necessary to improve my mental health. In many ways, I knew that I desperately needed help, but I was convinced that I did not deserve help. This was only possible because of interventions by my family and others who care about my life, and who helped me begin this process.

This is not a goodbye. This is a beginning. I will return to publishing this newsletter, and continue researching and reporting on the subjects I think are important for everyone to understand — now more than ever. However, I have decided that for at least the next month, it is necessary for me to focus on my mental health.

I plan on writing in more detail about my experiences with mental health and illness, because I believe that it is important for people that struggle with mental health and illness to know that they are not alone — especially when we feel like we are alone. But, for now, know that I am getting help, and that I do want to get better.

In Solidarity,

“Had we been a typical mammal, forced to adapt primarily through sluggish genetic evolution… we would’ve needed 88 million years to attain our current geographic footprint—and we would have split into some 2,200 distinct species in that time.”
