I want to be very clear about this: the horrific ritual abuse dynamics on this website are in very large part the result of big accounts trying to avoid becoming targets themselves by not speaking up. It's always easiest to say "Eh they have it coming" and let responsibility diffuse to someone else.
Anyway it's definitely Twitter that is cooking brains, and only Twitter, and definitely not any other very similar site that is even more of a social pressure cooker, that people spend an equivalent amount of time on, with an even-more tightly delineated set of social and ideological expectations.
I understand that you guys love to believe that harassment is the norm of the internet, and people who complain about it are simply weaklings, but you're literally just giving yourself a thin pretext for unthinking mass abuse. Essentially no one who becomes that kind of pariah shrugs it off.
Obviously I am going to regret saying this, but as someone who has (frequently) disagreed with Jay Kang, and even (occasionally) gotten torn to shreds by him for doing so, I think people really underestimate the toll it takes seeing people turn on you to impress their online friends.
